Doparoot vs Ruby (2026)
We make Doparoot, so we are biased, and you should read this knowing that. We have tried to be fair to Ruby, and where they are the better pick we say so in plain words.
Short version
This is not really AI against AI. Ruby puts a trained human on every call. We put an AI on every call and hand it to you when it needs one.
- Pick Ruby if: every caller must reach a human, your calls are emotional or complicated, or you need Spanish.
- Pick Doparoot if: most calls are the same few questions and a booking, and you want a flat fee that does not climb with every minute.
- Watch on Ruby: you pay for receptionist minutes, counted up to the next half minute, so spam and short calls still use your bundle.
- Watch on Doparoot: some callers will know it is not a person, and nobody but you takes the hand-off.

The real difference
Ruby has been answering phones for small businesses for over twenty years, with real receptionists. It uses AI, but only to help the person on the line. Ruby says plainly that it does not have an AI that answers on its own.
So the choice is not which AI is better. It is whether you want a person or a system.
Where Ruby is better
- A human on every call. Angry callers, grieving callers, callers who do not know what they need. People are better at this, and it is not close.
- Spanish, with bilingual receptionists.
- Law firms. Native connections to Clio, MyCase and Rocket Matter.
- Low volume. Their smallest bundle costs less than we do, if your calls are few and short.
- Payments and outbound calls, and a long public record of reviews.
Where Doparoot is better
- You do not set it up. We write the questions, the rules and the hand-off with you, test it against the calls you actually get, and it does not go live until you say so.
- It only offers times you approved, so it cannot book you across town at four.
- It hands off the moment somebody asks for a person. No arguing, no “let me try first”.
- A missed call still gets a text back within seconds, and the details land on your phone, in the same app as your texts and reviews.
- Minutes at cost, flat fee on top. A busy month does not raise the service fee.
The bigger difference is the meter. Ruby sells minutes. Their help centre says calls are counted in half-minute steps, rounded up, and include the receptionist’s wrap-up after you hang up. That is a fair way to price a person’s time, and it means a busy month, or a month of spam, costs more. Ours does not change with volume except for the carrier minutes, which you pay at cost.
Where we fall short
- We cost more than the self-serve AI tools, and at low call volume it is not close.
- There are no humans on our side. The AI hands the caller to you. If you cannot take it either, it takes the details and you call back.
- It is not instant. We build it on your real calls and test it with you first, which takes about two to three weeks. Some tools are live this afternoon.
Our pick
If most of your calls are “are you open”, “how much to come out” and “can you do Thursday”, and you want them answered the same way at 2pm and 2am for one flat fee: Doparoot. That is the job we built it for.
If a person must answer every single call: Ruby.
Questions
Does Ruby use AI to answer calls?
Not on its own. Ruby uses AI to help its human receptionists find answers and to transcribe calls, but a person answers every call.
How does Ruby charge?
A monthly bundle of receptionist minutes, with overage beyond it. Their help centre says minutes are counted in 30-second steps, rounded up. Current prices are at ruby.com/pricing.
Is an AI receptionist as good as a person?
On routine calls it can be just as useful and it never goes home. On complicated or emotional calls a person is better. That is the real choice between Ruby and Doparoot.
Can Doparoot hand a caller to a person?
Yes, to you, the moment they ask. Doparoot does not have its own receptionists.
