Doparoot vs Smith.ai (2026)
We make Doparoot, so we are biased, and you should read this knowing that. We have tried to be fair to Smith.ai, and where they are the better pick we say so in plain words.
Short version
The deciding question is whether you need a human to answer when you cannot. If yes, Smith.ai has hundreds of them and we have none.
- Pick Smith.ai if: you want live receptionists behind the AI, need Spanish, or run on ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro and want calls written into it.
- Pick Doparoot if: you want one flat fee, someone else to build and test it, and every caller who asks for a person to reach you.
- Watch on Smith.ai: it charges per call, and its own pages describe add-ons and refund terms differently. Read the plan you are buying.
- Watch on Doparoot: we cost more than their entry AI plans, and nobody but you is on the other end of a hand-off.

The real difference
Smith.ai is an answering service that added AI. It has been running for more than a decade, it has live receptionists in North America, and you can choose AI first, people first, or a mix. Its biggest market is law firms, and it shows: intake, conflict checks and payment collection are well developed.
Doparoot is the other way round. It is an AI receptionist we build for one business at a time, and when a caller needs a person, the person is you. That is cheaper to run than a room of receptionists, and worse on the calls where a stranger’s judgement would help.
Where Smith.ai is better
- Real people. If the AI cannot cope, a human receptionist can pick it up. We cannot offer that.
- Spanish, from the AI and from the people.
- ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro. Smith.ai connects to both and writes the customer and call notes into them. If your day runs out of one of those, that matters.
- Very low volume. Their AI has a free tier and a cheap plan. If you get a handful of calls a month and are happy to set it up yourself, it will cost you less than we do.
- Track record. Years of calls and hundreds of public reviews.
Where Doparoot is better
- You do not set it up. We write the questions, the rules and the hand-off with you, test it against the calls you actually get, and it does not go live until you say so.
- It only offers times you approved, so it cannot book you across town at four.
- It hands off the moment somebody asks for a person. No arguing, no “let me try first”.
- A missed call still gets a text back within seconds, and the details land on your phone, in the same app as your texts and reviews.
- Minutes at cost, flat fee on top. A busy month does not raise the service fee.
The per-call model is the other thing to think about. Smith.ai bills by the call, and some features are priced per call on top. A busy week costs more in exactly the week you are busiest. Ours is a flat fee with the phone minutes passed through at cost.
Where we fall short
- We cost more than the self-serve AI tools, and at low call volume it is not close.
- There are no humans on our side. The AI hands the caller to you. If you cannot take it either, it takes the details and you call back.
- It is not instant. We build it on your real calls and test it with you first, which takes about two to three weeks. Some tools are live this afternoon.
Our pick
If you are a trade or a small local business, you want one number on the invoice, and you would rather somebody built it and tested it on your own calls than learn a new tool: Doparoot. That is who we built it for. Ring our line and judge for yourself.
If you are a law firm, or you need a human voice on every awkward call: Smith.ai.
Questions
Is Smith.ai an AI or a human answering service?
Both. Smith.ai sells an AI receptionist and a live receptionist service, and you can combine them so the AI answers first and humans pick up what it cannot handle. Doparoot is AI only, and hands callers to you.
How does Smith.ai charge?
By the call, on monthly plans, with separate plans for AI and for live receptionists. We do not reprint their prices because they change; check smith.ai/pricing for the current numbers.
Does Doparoot have live receptionists?
No. When a caller asks for a person, it transfers to you straight away. If you cannot take it, it takes the details and they land on your phone.
Which is better for a contractor?
If you want real people behind the AI or need calls written into ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro, Smith.ai. If you want it built and tested for you on a flat fee, Doparoot.
